POP LOUISVILLEA Self-Directed Learning Community
Building Our Community
POP CO-OP
POP Louisville is an inclusive, LGBTQ+ friendly community creating a playful and self-directed environment for homeschoolers age 6-18 .
We are a non-profit and parent-run group in Louisville KY. We are a secular, diverse, and collaborative group that provides a non-judgmental space for learning experiences and social interactions.
We are committed to supporting each other in parenting gently and with love, communicating with awareness and compassion, and treating each other with respect, inclusive of differences among us.
At POP, we believe that people are naturally curious and they learn better when making their own decisions about what, when, how, and with whom to learn. Adults are present to guide kids through their learning and to help them strengthen their social skills.
At the moment, we are not a drop-off. (This is a future goal for us). If a kid is at co-op, the parent or guardian must also be present and attentive.
*Self-Directed Education (SDE): Education that derives from the self-chosen activities and life experiences of the learner.

(Yes, we have tweens and teens! )
who
We are a group of unschooling/homeschooling families, building a community for our children to learn and play.
At POP, the parents work together to provide a rich environment where the children direct their own learning. We embrace the idea that children are born with an innate desire to explore their world and learn. (See SDE*)
The families in our co-op approach homeschooling from a variety of philosophies, but all value the experience that our self-directed co-op offers to their child(ren).
WHEN
Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 1pm – 4pm.
You choose which day(s) you would like to attend. You may attend one, two or three days each week.
Non-members please register for your first visit via the “Visit POP” form to help our fellow POP families and the volunteer organizers plan accordingly.
We ask members to join our private BAND group communication app after having visited POP.
what
We are not your typical co-op. We don’t follow any curriculum. Learning and activities are child-driven and parent facilitated. There isn’t anything parent-planned or executed without the explicit interest/request from one or more of the children.
Free play is always available. We also have optional offerings available, based on interests of the children. These offerings change depending on children involved!

WHERE
Centrally located, near the UofL main campus, we meet at 3016 Preston Hwy Louisville KY 40217, inside Fourth Presbyterian Church.
We are not affiliated with the church, other than renting their awesome space.
how much
Monthly Membership Dues are per child.
We currently offer “Levels” of membership, based on how many days you attend.
- “Level 1” One day per week – $10/month
- “Level 2” Two days per week – $20/month
- “Level 3” Three days per week – $30/month
We strive to keep dues as low as possible.
(currently works out to be about $2.50 per meetup)
We offer free visits at first, so families can determine if our community is right for them, and vice versa.
There may be costs associated with future optional offerings, (supplies etc,) but costs will be minimal.
